Starting a Business with Flutter and Serverpod
At our last event with Paul Köhler, a freelance Flutter developer from Hamburg, we didn’t just focus on development with Flutter, but more on starting your own business based on Flutter and Serverpod.
You have absolutely no idea about app development and are unfamiliar with the terms Flutter and Serverpod? No problem, here’s a brief introduction:
What is Flutter?
Flutter is a cross-platform framework for mobile app development, created by Google.
It is based on the Dart programming language and allows cross-platform development, enabling developers to create apps for Android, iOS, web, and desktop all at once. One codebase—multiple platforms.
The Advantages of Flutter (Apps)
The advantages of Flutter are unbeatable when it comes to efficient app development. Here are some of the key benefits:
Pixel-Perfect Design
It’s a running joke in creative teams when designers come up with grand ideas, only to be met with a simple “no” from the developer. Flutter allows you to control every pixel on the screen and implement virtually any design. So, designers are no longer limited.
Performance
Flutter compiles to the native source code of the target platforms, achieving native performance with 60 fps and even 120 fps on high-performance devices.
Efficiency
When you need to develop a simple function, instead of requiring both an iOS developer and an Android developer, you only need one Flutter developer. Flutter saves time, resources, and most importantly, money—making it incredibly efficient.
What is Serverpod?
Serverpod is a framework for developing server applications specifically designed for use with Flutter apps. It simplifies communication between the Flutter app (the frontend) and the server (the backend), where data and business logic are stored and processed.
The Advantages of Serverpod
Serverpod also offers a variety of helpful features for app development:
Seamless Integration with Flutter
Serverpod was explicitly developed for Flutter, based on the Dart programming language, which Flutter also uses. So, as a Flutter developer, you’ll feel right at home.
Code Generation
Normally, you have to write a lot of code to enable the app to communicate with the backend. Serverpod generates the models and client-side code, saving a tremendous amount of time and preventing errors.
Powerful ORM
With Serverpod’s ORM, queries use native Dart types and null safety. There is a direct path from statically checked code to the database.
Review of Flutter Meetup Vol.2
Back to our event: the theme of our last meetup with Paul Köhler was “Building a Startup with Flutter and Serverpod,” where Paul shared exciting insights into the founding of his startup.
Accordingly, the focus was less on technical details and specific use cases, and more on how working with these frameworks can turn an app idea into a functioning startup with a successful product.
Since tools like Flutter and Serverpod can significantly simplify the workload of app development, more time is left for the administrative and entrepreneurial aspects of the process.
Overall, the presentation covered useful strategies (such as the Eisenhower principle) for personal work, as well as insights and experiences related to personal matters like team building, mindset questions, and critically evaluating one’s decisions.
Once again, we were able to take away a lot, and even after the official part of the evening, we enjoyed a great time together with inspiring conversations and a lively exchange of ideas.
We want to thank Paul Köhler for his lively, honest, and stimulating presentation, and Martin Appelmann for co-hosting the evening!
We’re thrilled about this great experience with our guests and are eagerly looking forward to our upcoming events.
